New Bethlehem Project: Campaign for Permanent 24/7 Shelter
King County has awarded $2 million to the capital campaign! The project is now considered funded to a good level and Catholic Community Services can move forward with the design work towards a projected groundbreaking in spring 2019. We are also excited to announce that of the $1 million needed from community support, we have raised $950,000! (See attachment.) There is still time to donate and help us cross this exciting finish line!

We continue to experience a larger number of guests as in summer, although the first couple hours can be quieter until kids get out of school and they arrive with parents. We averaged about 40 guests daily in September, with a high of 66. The greatest needs we have to provide for our guests are volunteers willing to work a few hours and preparers for the primary meal at dinner time. See more on this in the final section.
Andrew Ndayambaje - New Case Manager
Mid-August, Andrew Ndayambaje joined NB as Case Manager. Andrew grew up in east Africa and has the equivalent of a Bachelor's Degree in law from a college in Kigali, Rwanda. He subsequently worked there for a law firm and was also a human rights activist. He moved to the US in 2011 and after a couple of relocations for jobs he finally arrived in Washington in 2017. He has varied work experience, including with Union Gospel Mission locally, but his passion throughout has been in social services and community building. As Case Manager, he assists in numerous areas, including jobs, education and housing. He is working full time Monday-Friday. Andrew is married, lives in Lynnwood and loves sports, especially the Seattle Sounders soccer team. This is a remarkable young man whose experience and desire to help can make a huge difference for our clients.
The Neiferts - Volunteer Spotlight
Mary and Don Neifert are regular volunteers for NB. Mary works in the family room on Sundays, where she especially enjoys interacting with kids and their parents. Her favorite part is celebrating special moments with parents. Don drives the NB van in the evening to deliver guests to the overnight shelter. He likes doing this because it relieves the burden for guests of taking buses or walking with luggage, kids or pets. Don's favorite part is that helping saves families time and money while reducing stress.
The Neiferts chose NB for volunteering because "it offers such needed support for families experiencing homelessness and by helping it provides more time for regular staff to do their incredible work." Mary and Don are married, have three adult children in college, live in Woodinville and attend Holy Family Parish. Don is an engineer and Mary is an occupational therapist. We are fortunate to have these two special volunteers.
Volunteer Appreciation Event
Volunteers and members of the NB Steering Committee, please come and celebrate with us on Saturday, October 20 from 6-7:30 PM at the annual Volunteer Appreciation Event. We want to celebrate what has been accomplished and thank each of you for your time, effort and prayers that have facilitated New Bethlehem helping those in need. There will be yummy bites, wine and activities to become acquainted. We will meet in the Holy Family Parish Social Hall (7045 120th Ave NE, Kirkland,) allowing some social time before an informal program begins. Significant others welcome. How You Can Help
We immensely appreciate those who contribute to the operations of NB. Our most pressing need now is for individuals who can contribute volunteer time of about two hours in the afternoon or especially in the evening. This is a significant item, as the power of more volunteers = the power of what we can accomplish for guests. Also, we have a need for individuals or groups who can provide the dinner meal. Information on these and other opportunities follows.
Volunteering We encourage you to give this a try if you have not. An option is to get a friend or another family member and work together by signing up for slots at the same time. Provide the dinner meal or snacks The dinner meal can be done by an individual but is also great fun for a group. Snacks may be an option when you have less time. Get information, including dinner ideas, at www.nbpshelter.org/provide-a-meal.
